ABSEILING
ENDORSEMENT
This
endorsement is awarded to individuals who have a demonstrated
capability in applying
instructional skills within the context of abseiling. PACI members
with abseiling endorsements are authorised to:
- Conduct abseiling
activities within the scope of their endorsement that do not lead
to a formal qualification; and
- Act as an
abseiling guide within the scope of their endorsement where no
formal training is to take place; and
- Conduct
abseiling training courses within the scope of their classification & endorsement
which lead to a formal qualification.
Performance
Requirements
To qualify, an
individual must:
- Be at least
18 years of age; and
- Be in good
physical condition for abseiling and submit proof of medical fitness.
If a medical examination is required, the form must be signed by
a licensed physician and state that the applicant is fit for climbing
and abseiling. The physician signing the form must not be the applicant;
and
- Have been
abseiling for 12 months with proof of 50 abseil descents of 20m
length/height or greater. If applying for multi-pitch endorsement*,
a minimum of 10 descents are to have been multi-pitch abseils (safe
ground could not be reached in one rope length). When determining
minimum experience:

- each
abseil descent must have been performed from a different anchor
system over different descent points |
|
- competency
is required in utilising the following types/designs of descending/belay
devices: |
1.
Circular (e.g. Figure 8, Harpoon)
2. Planular (e.g.
Stitch plate)
3. Tubular (e.g. ATC,
Bug, Pyramid)
4. In-line adjustable
(eg, Whale tail, Gold tail, Rack)
5. Auto-locking
(eg, Gri Gri, SRT double brake, Petzl Stop); and
4. Have a current
recognised qualification in senior first aid and CPR. 5. Required abseiling
skills:
-Select, use
and maintain abseiling equipment -Select an abseil
site -Deploy an abseil
rope -Perform an
abseil descent -Lock-off during
an abseil descent -Operate a self
belay system -Arrest an uncontrolled
abseil descent
Upgrading: A PACI instructor
may upgrade to a top-rope
endorsement by personal application to the Training and Education
manager. In addition, the applicant must complete the following:
- Submit proof
of top-rope climbing experience as outlined in the individual membership
standards; and
- Assist an
active status PACI instructor on one complete Top-rope climbing
course. (Written verification from the course instructor is required);
and
- Successfully
complete the Top-rope climbing instructor exam.
Renewal:
- Annual submission
of a completed, signed PACI Membership Renewal Agreement; and
- Annual PACI
membership fees paid.
NOTE:
PACI members must be in active
status before they can represent themselves as being authorised
to conduct/supervise
training related activities.
